Lapels #1 - #4
In reflection on making a series of wall textiles, I felt the need to create pieces that engage touch. I wanted to use the tufting tool to produce surfaces that interact with the body. This led to my active exploration of tufting wearable forms. It started as hats and furniture cushioning. Upon fixing the fur trim on a coat I had adored, I removed it instead and used it as a guide to tuft a lapel - the animal texture and color disregarded as I used reds and blues and greens to reinvent the traditional garment. I was most satisfied with this form of textile. Its function as a wearable piece encourages one to interact with it - a shape and fleece-like surface that embraces around the shoulders creates an intimate interplay. What was once an adorned decoration exclusively found in formal wear becomes wearable art accessible to all who view it.
